Fredrick Douglass: Frederick Douglass was born a slave, but he taught himself how to read and write. Fredrick Douglass involved himself in the improvement of the lives of other black men. He organized and carried out a slave revolt in his home plantation and escaped to freedom.

Harriet Tubman: Harriet Tubman was a conductor in the Underground Railroad system. Over a span of 20 years, she made over 20 trips into the South and helped over 300 slaves escape. She never lost a passenger during those 20 years.

William Still: William Still is the youngest child of 17 brothers and sisters. He
lived as a slave with his parents in the younger stage of his life. His father, Levin Still, escaped slavery in Maryland for freedom in New Jersey.

Levi Coffin: Levi Coffin started his work with the Underground Railroad at the tender age of 15. His house is known as the "Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad". He worked as a stationmaster until he died in 1877.
